J-PET at EANM'24 Congress

The 37th Annual Congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine EANM took place in Hamburg, October 19-23, 2024, aiming at the exchange and discussion of the latest theranostic advances, the most impactful clinical evidence, the most recently developed radiopharmaceuticals, and the most novel imaging and detection technologies. Two J-PET Collaboration members: prof. Paweł Moskal and mgr Szymon Parzych presented new advancements in novel positronium lifetime imaging with PET, first-ever in-vivo positronium lifetime images of humans and metabolic images with J-PET scanner.

1st Total-Body J-PET General Meeting 2024
On the 5th and 6th of October 2024, the first Total-Body J-PET General Meeting was organised by the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy, and Applied Computer Science at Jagiellonian University, Kraków. The meeting brought together collaborators from various prestigious institutions, including:
- Cracow University Hospital,
- National Laboratory of Frascati, Italy,
- AGH University of Science and Technology,
- Cyclotron Centre Bronowice,
- Cracow University of Technology,
- Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology, Warsaw,
- Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin,
- Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw.
The event began with an informal gathering on the evening of 5th October in the heart of Kraków, where participants discussed the present and future of J-PET research while enjoying delicious Indian cuisine.

On 6th October, the formal meeting commenced with an opening speech by the Dean of our department, Prof. Dr hab. Zbigniew Postawa, followed by opening statements from the collaborating institutions. The day proceeded with presentations from our esteemed collaborators and colleagues, showcasing the latest developments in Total-Body J-PET hardware and software, as well as exciting research projects.

Every participant, including PhD students, presented their work, which led to fruitful discussions and fostered collaboration across different research groups. The event highlighted the significant progress being made in J-PET technology and its potential future applications.

Professor Moskal won the award at the TBPET2024

Professor Paweł Moskal won the award for the best presentation at the Total-Body PET 2024 - TBPET2024 conference, awarded by the European Societies for Molecular Imaging (ESMI).
His presentation titled Constructing total-body JPET: 250 cm long multi-photon PET from plastic scintillators was devoted to the project of building a whole-body PET tomograph from plastic scintillators. The prototype of this device was first used for clinical imaging at the University Hospital in Krakow and at the University Medical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw.
The conference took place in Groningen at the FORUM cultural center between September 19 and 21. More than 220 scientists and clinicians from around the world took part in it, including research groups cooperating with the only manufacturers of long-axis field imaging (LAFOV) PET tomographs: United Imaging and Siemens Healthineers and GE HealthCare.
Professor Paweł Moskal presented to participants the vision of making molecular imaging technology available also in low- and middle-income countries, not only by producing economical PET tomographs made of plastic, but also by producing more accessible radionuclides for imaging (scandium-44 isotope).

J-PET members presented their research at the EXA/LEAP 2024 conference in Vienna, where Neha Chug won the best poster award on the CPT symmetry test with J-PET.

Jako jedyna studentka na Wydziale Fizyki, Astronomii i Informatyki Stosowanej, Agata Grabska otrzymała stypendium ministra nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego (MNiSW) na rok akademicki 2023/2024 za znaczące osiągnięcia naukowe, artystyczne lub sportowe.

Agata Grabska studiuje na V roku biofizyki, swoją pracę magisterską pt. "Analysis of the nanostructure of fibrin clots fixed with various organic fixatives" przygotowuje w Zakładzie Fizyki Medycznej pod opieką prof. Ewy Stępień. Jednym z osiągnięć zgłoszonych do nagrody MNiSW jest wygłoszenie prezentacji zatytułowanej "Comparison of the fresh and fixed blood clots with PALS technique" na konferencji Applications of radiation detection techniques in fundamental physics, food control, medicine and biology" we Frascati w Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF - INFN).

Manish Das received 1st prize for the best poster at EMIM 2024 conference

At the 19th European Molecular Imaging Meeting (EMIM 2024), which took place in Alfandega Congress Centre in Porto, Portugal, Manish Das was awarded for the best poster in the PET, SPECT & Hybrid Technologies category. The winning poster was titled "Developing Positronium Imaging Technique for the Liver Phantom Using Modular J-PET".

OPUS-22 project general meeting in the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology

On 27 February 2024, we visited the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology, Centre of Radio-chemistry and Nuclear Chemistry, Warsaw. During this visit, an experiment was conducted to separate the 44Sc from the target material (CaCO3) using a separation system created by Dr Rafał Walczak in the Institute. It was attended by 6 members of our group: Prof Paweł Moskal, Ermias Yitayew Beyene, Wiktor Mryka, Manish Das, Keyvan Tayefi Ardebili and Piyush Pandey.

On the next day, 28 February, a meeting was held in the same institute and it was attended by 7 members of our group: Prof. Paweł Moskal, Prof. Ewa Stępień, Ermias Yitayew Beyene, Wiktor Mryka, Manish Das, Keyvan Tayefi Ardebili and Piyush Pandey. Our members also presented their work in the meeting:

Kick-off meeting of scientists implementing the OPUS 24+LAB High-throughput PET imaging

On 18-20 February 2024, a meeting of scientists implementing the OPUS 24+LAB High-throughput PET imaging by decoding multi-photon signals on long axial field-of-view PET using physics-quided artificial inteligence project (PI: Prof. Ewa Stępień and Prof. Kuangyu Shi) was held.

Positronium Measurements Results At III Kongres Młodej Nauki - Międzynarodowa Konferencja

III Kongres Młodej Nauki held at the University of Gdańsk brought together young researchers from Poland and Europe to present their scientific work through paper presentations and posters. The multidisciplinary conference showcased around 200 papers. The event emphasized international collaboration, with the participation of Ukraine's Odessa National University. Plenary sessions covered challenges and opportunities in scientific careers, financing, and administrative solutions. Special panels on topics like Ukraine-Poland relations were included. During the Young Science Congress at the University of Gdańsk, Simbarashe Moyo successfully presented his findings on Positronium measurements of blood clots. This study explored the application of PALS in differentiating blood clots. The results showcased the potential use of PALS as a biomarker in cardiac masses assessment during PET examination.

Arrival of CT at the Center for Theranostics

On June 15th, the CT (Computed Tomography) machine was delivered to the Center for Theranostics, Kopernika 40. It marks the arrival of the first component for the total-body J-PET, a significant milestone in the center's development. Opening Ceremony of the Center for Theranostics took place on 5th June 2023 in the Theranostics Center building in Kopernika 40 Street in Kraków. Image reconstruction meeting at NCBJ, Warsaw

On April 21, in Warsaw, we had a meeting together with scientists from National Centre for Nuclear Research with whom we cooperate. The topic of the meeting was image reconstruction focused on 3 gamma and positronium reconstruction. Researchers from Warsaw presented the progress of their studies. Researchers from Jagiellonian University also presented progress and future plans for research development.

5-day visit to the laboratories of iThemba LABS

Professor Ewa Ł. Stępień, prof. Paweł Moskal, dr Szymon Niedźwiecki and dr Magdalena Marzec, the representatives of the Department of Experimental Particle Physics and Applications and the Department of Medical Physics, building the Theranostics Center, had the pleasure of visiting between March 27 to April 1, 2023 the laboratories of iThemba LABS at the invitation of the directors and Dr. Faical Azaiez and Dr. Rudolph Nchodu and the head of the Radiation Biophysics Laboratory, Dr. Randal Fisher. iThemba LABS near Cape Town (South Africa) is a group of acceleration laboratories (Laboratories for Accelerator Based Science _ iTlemba LABS https://tlabs.ac.za/), where particle accelerators (linear and cyclotrons) are used as research tools to study the structure and properties of matter and for the production of medical radioisotopes used in diagnostics, imaging and therapy. During the 5-day visit, seminars were delivered combined with familiarization with the accelerators located at iThemba LABS, including 200-MeV Separated Sector Cyclotron (SSC) powered by two fixed-pole cyclotrons to pre-accelerate the beam. In 2023, the flagship iThemba South African Isotope Facility (SAIF) project was launched, the aim of which is to increase the availability of beams for research and to develop new research areas on new and innovative solutions in the field of cancer treatment and early diagnosis. In this field, both iThemba LABS and the Center for Theranostics want to establish long-term cooperation, under which new radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals will be created, but also the use of innovative techniques for imaging and diagnostics of early stages of cancer.

18th European Molecular Imaging Meeting - EMIM 2023

The EMIM addresses the latest developments in morphological, functional and molecular imaging at all scales, including mass spectroscopy, microscopy, and noninvasive imaging in preclinical and exploratory clinical studies. This also includes new strategies for image-guided therapies and theranostics. The J-PET members participated and presented their work.

Positronium imaging with Quadra in Bern

On 26th of February we had a pleasure of visiting colleagues from Inselspital Bern: Lorenzo Mercolli, Hasan Sari, Kuangyu Shi, Axel Rominger. In collaboration with Will Steinberger from Siemens and Lorenzo Mercolli from Inselspital we performed experiments with modified NEMA phantom in view of ortho-positronium lifetime measurements with 68Ga isotope. During the visit prof. Paweł Moskal and prof. Ewa Stępień delivered a talk about positronium imaging and biomarkers development.

OPUS-22 project kick-off meeting

Kick-off meeting of the research project, OPUS-22, in Cracow on December 12, 2022, aimed at the development of three-photon emitting radiotracers for positronium imaging. Professor Ewa Stępień takes part among 50 invited experts from around the world in Sparks! Forum at CERN.
The theme for the second edition of the Sparks! Forum is Future Technology for Health. CERN has actively pursued medical applications of its technologies since as far back as the 1970s. The tools of experimental particle physics are ubiquitous in hospitals and biomedical research. However, Sparks! goes beyond what is done at CERN.
Spanning the domains of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, the topics for this edition of Sparks! will spark new questions about the links between medical technologies and fundamental science, globalization, accessibility, trust, ethics, and more. We will be calling on doctors, tech developers, economists, policymakers, ethicists, patient associations, medical researchers, humanitarian organizations, medical foundations, UN agencies, data specialists, climate modelers, AI developers, and journalists to discuss the topics listed below - and any others that arise in the process!

Zimbabweans in Ukraine Evacuation

At least 250 Zimbabwean students were stranded in Ukraine after flights were grounded as Russia began a military offensive on 24th February 2022. The students sent a plea to the Zimbabwe government to be evacuated. Our PhD student mgr Simbarashe Moyo joined in helping the evacuated students. You can his presentation about it here.

First measurement campaign with human patients using the Modular J-PET

In the middle of March (07-25.03.2022), the first measurement campaign with human patients took place in the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw (WUM) on Banacha street, Warsaw. This research was performed using the Modular J-PET prototype, which consists of one layer of cylindrically arranged 24 modules of plastic scintillators. On the first day (07.03.2022), the tomograph together with all the electronics (cables, server etc.) was transported from UJ Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Sciences faculty to the WUM hospital. After one day of assembling the tomograph in the hospital, the trial measurements with a uniformly filled cylindrical phantom were done. On 10.03.2022 a measurement with the NEMA IEC phantom was performed. On Friday (11.03.2022) the first measurement of a patient with the J-PET tomograph took place. This started a two-weeks long measurement campaign with human subjects. In this campaign, the imaging tests were done on patients subjected to either head or torso region. Additionally, a measurement of a 44Sc radioisotope has been performed together with researchers from the Heavy Ion Laboratory at the University of Warsaw. Many thanks to all WUM University Clinical Center and UW Heavy Ion Laboratory staff, as well as members of the J-PET group, who were a big part of this project.

Positronium physics day

J-PET collaboration image reconstruction meeting in Warsaw

Based on the discussion on the contents presentations, the participants drew the roadmap by considering the horizon of developments in J-PET collaboration

Hadron Therapy Center experiment

In the middle of the October the experiment aimed at measuring the range of irradiation using proton beam in different phantoms was conducted. This experiment was carried out at the hadron therapy center in the Nuclear Physics Institute, which is a part of Polish Academy of Sciences and is located in the north part of Kraków (Bronowice). This research was performed by using modified version of already existing modular J-PET prototype - dual-head, which was designed especially for this experiment. The measurements were possible due to the fact that during proton beam irradiation, the small fraction of protons is able to convert some elements (like carbon, nitrogen or oxygen) into their beta+ radioactive isotopes: 11C, 13N and 15O. This means that after emission of a positron and its annihilation with an electron, two gamma quanta that are produced can be used to measure the annihilation position, which in turn is correlated to the position of isotope production by the proton beam. Measurements will give the possibility to study this correlation during the proton beam irradiation, which was never successfully performed before. In the facility where the experiment was conducted mainly tumors located in inoperable positions are treated, especially those located very close to vital organs, e.g. brain. Thus knowing exact depth of proton interaction and possibility to modify it in a fast way is pivotal.
Above-mentioned dual-head is a device consisting of two separate heads. Each of the heads consisted of 12 modules (in total 24 modules). Single modules were ordered into three layers and each layer consisted of four modules. Details of the dual-head construction can be seen in Figure 1. On the first day of the experiment (16.10.2021r.) dual-head setup was transported from UJ Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Sciences faculty to the Hadron Therapy Center in Bronowice. Dual-head along with all the electronics (cables, server etc.) was transported in boxes filled with foam in order to minimize the possibility of any damage. During the first day two heads were assembled and trial measurements with weak radioactive source were conducted in order to see if all the parts of dual-head device are working. This part was done by dr Szymon Niedźwiecki, dr Grzegorz Korcyl, Maciej Bakalarek and prof. Paweł Moskal (Figure 2.).
First off beam measurements were conducted on 18.10.2021 and they were continuing throughout the week, until Sunday (24.10.2021r.). During off-beam measurements PMMA phantoms were placed on the clinical table, then they were irradiated by proton beam and transported to the other room where the dual head device was stationed (Figure 3). After first off-beam measurements some initial data analysis was performed, thanks to help of dr Aleksander Gajos (Figure 4).
On Sunday (23.10.2021) whole set-up was transported to the room where the patients are treated. Dual-head was placed on the clinical table and the nozzle, from which the beam is coming was placed directly above the irradiated phantoms (Figure 5). Unfortunately, measurements had to be rescheduled to another day due to the cyclotron malfunction.
On Sunday (24.10.2021), after the beam was working and was stable again on-beam measurements were conducted. Similarly as with previous measurements, PMMA phantoms were irradiated and additionally, CIRs phantom was irradiated (Figure 6).
All the measurements were supervised and controlled from the control room (Figure 7), which was located right next to the therapy room where the irradiation took place. Many thanks to dr inż. Jan Gajewski, dr Antoni Ruciński, dr inż. Marzena Rydygier, all CCB staff and members of J-PET group, who were a big part of this project (Figure 8).

International scientific conference 1st Symposium on Theranostics took place on 9 ? 11 October 2021 at the newly established Theranostics Center in Kopernika 40 St. in Kraków, Poland. The conference brought together physicists and medical specialists devoted to the development of medical diagnostic and treatment methods. The main purpose of the 1st Symposium on Theranostics was to exchange knowledge andexperience from various institutions in the field of applied and fundamental nuclear physics, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, materials science, medical imaging, radiotherapy and healthcare.

Third J-PET Software Workshop
The Third J-PET Software Workshop took place on the 10th of October 2019 at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. It featured two practical training sessions dedicated to the software that is being used for the analysis of the J-PET data as well as for generation of J-PET Monte Carlo Simulations. It was intended to introduce both new users and users of the former releases to the features of the latest version of the J-PET Analysis Framework (framework repository) for analysis of data. Moreover, for the first time, an introduction to generation of the J-PET MC simulations was given.

Workshop in Frascati: Is Quantum Theory Exact? From quantum foundations to quantum applications

Workshop at LNF-INFN, Frascati was organized to discuss the experimental and theoretical advancement of quantum physics and to investigate its roles in biological systems. A lecture by Sir Roger Penrose titled as Wave-function collapse as a resolution of a Tension between general relativity and quantum mechanics was the major attraction of the workshop. J-PET and TEAM meeting in Frascati

Interesting talks about theoretical and experimental hot issues related to quantum physics were presented. Total Body PET Workshop, Brussels

Workshop was a multidisciplinary event to launch new projects and ideas for imaging and therapy with Total Body PET. Research groups in attendance can present their activities, their interest and potential projects in Total Body PET and this will be followed by brainstorming on different topics (e.g. Brain body, pharma, large animal, therapy, in beam imaging). Two J-PET group members took part in the workshop and presented the possibility to use positronium life-time imaging along standard measurement of dose distribution and new detector prototype based on SiPM readout and modular design.

DESY meeting for QETIR development

During this meeting with Dr. Ekaterina Mikhayelova, which held in DESY, Hamburg, we discussed about the methods of J-PET image reconstruction by QETIR from the data of GATE simulation. most of the discussions were about making QETIR compatible with multi-layer geometries and also Long axial Field Of View (FOV). The other problem which solved in this meeting was data converting from GATE to QETIR readable type. All the meetings and discussions with Dr. Mikhayelova was useful in QETIR development.

Visit of Professor Simon Cherry

Professor Simon R. Cherry from the University of California, USA visited the J-PET lab during his participation in 3rd Jagiellonian symposium chaired by Professor Pawel Moskal. Professor Cherry is one of the main leaders of the EXPLORER facility developed as a first crystal based total body PET scanner. The opportunity leads to a very fruitful discussion on the current status and future challenges in the field of medical science. Professor Moskal showed him the J-PET, first scanner in the world composed of plastic scintillators, which has the potential to provide an economic alternative to the commercially available crystal based scanners. Furthermore, the status and applications of modular PET, a compact and portable scanner were also discussed.

Gate Output J-PET Analyzer(GOJA)

Gate Output J-PET Analyzer(GOJA) developed and maintained by Pawel Kowalski, a member of J-PET collaboration, is a strong tool to analyze ?raw? data of Gate simulation. GOJA is written in C++ and Python and is able to analyze any ?list mode? output of J-PET Gate simulation. One of the most valuable output of GOJA is a list of the coincidence events which include information about hits positions, energy deposition and type of coincidences mainly tagged as true or scatter ones. These information can be use in image reconstruction. A short two day workshop (23- 24 May, 2019) in learning the essentials of GOJA software was organized by Pawel Kowalski in Jagiellonian University. This workshop was divided mainly in two sections. First part was dedicated to learning the basics of software and its applications whereas second one was dedicated for questioning, discussion and hands on examples for the uses of software. In addition to GOJA, Pawel introduced a new interactive session called as simulation manager which merge the GOJA and GATE all in one for J-PET applications.

Visiting Ghent University

In April 2019, Professor Pawel Moskal and Meysam Dadgar visited Ghent University, Belgium. There is an advanced research group dedicated to studies in Medical Imaging and Signal Processing (MEDISIP) which works in a close collaboration with Ghent Univesity Hospital. The group is lead by Professor Stefaan Vandenberghe. The main motivation was to visit their lab called as INFINITY, a preclinical core imaging facility of Ghent University providing multi-modality imaging services e.g., PET, SPECT, MRI, Ultrasound and Optical Imaging etc. There was also an opportunity to visit radiopharmaceutical facility of Ghent Univesity Hospital. In INFINITY lab, the research group from Ghent University developing an imaging technique in PET and improving the detector performance by using monolithic based PET systems. Meysam Ddadgar stayed for one week in order to have hands on experience with learning the locally used image reconstruction softwares named as Quantitative Emission Tomography Iterative Reconstruction (QETIR) and data analyzing procedures

Recently, a team of researchers lead by Professor P. Moskal visited the Trento University (TU) in Trento, Italy. The aim of the visit was to discuss the possibilities of collaboration with the group in TU which is intensively involved in AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment gravity Interferometry Spectroscopy) experiment. The workshop on 'Discrete symmetries in particle, nuclear and atomic physics and implications for our universe' was organized by the combined efforts of many international institute and universities such as ECT*, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Uppsala University, California State University and Helmholtz-Institute Mainz at Villa Tambosi for the duration 8-12 October, 2018, Trento, Italy. The aim of the meeting was to bring the scientists together exploring the horizons in the field of discrete symmetries both in theory and experimental sectors. During this meeting, a lots of present-day open questions were addressed e.g., violation of CPT symmetries, Lorentz or spin-statistics etc. in the field of particle, nuclear and atomic physics.

2nd Jagiellonian Symposium on Fundamental and Applied Subatomic Physics took place June 4 - 11, 2017 in Collegium Maius - the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University. Moreover to the Symposium there were three independent focused three Satelite Meetings: Workshop on PET and MR Imaging, AMADEUS Collaboration Workshop and Workshop on Discrete Symmetries and Entanglement. Following the success of first meeting organised in 2015, this Symposium was a continuation to once again bring together scientists from physics, nuclear medicine and healthcare. One of the main purposes of the Jagiellonian Symposium is to exchange experience and expertise gained by various institutions in the field of applied and fundamental nuclear as well as atomic and particle physics, medical imaging, radiotherapy and healthcare. The symposium was a showcase for forefront experimental as well as theoretical developments, where the interplay between outstanding research and innovative concepts on the borderline between basic and applied science was promoted. Second J-PET Software Workshop

The Second J-PET Software Workshop took place on the 20th and 21st of March 2017 at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. The two-day workshop was dedicated to the software that is being used for the analysis of the J-PET data. The spectrum of subjects covered in the talks and tutorials ranged from on using the J-PET Analysis Framework (framework repository) for analysis of data from our prototype scanners to general programming techniques (e.g. C++ 11 features, STL, debugging and profiling) and tools (e.g Unix shell tools and git version control) were given.

First J-PET Software Workshop

The First J-PET Software Workshop took place the 7th and 8th of July at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. The two-day workshop was dedicated to the software that is being used for the analysis and simulations of the J-PET data. Apart from presentations covering different topics, several tutorials were conducted. Among those: a tutorial on using the J-PET Analysis Framework ( framework repository) for analysis of data from our prototype scanners, a tutorial on Go4-package, used for the detector performance monitoring and also a dedicated session for the GATE simulation package adapted to be use within the J-PET project. Apart from the J-PET specific subjects, also several general talks about programming techniques (e.g. unit testing, software design) and tools (e.g git) were given. The workshop gathered users and developers from three different organization involved in the J-PET project (Jagiellonian University, National Centre for Nuclear Research and Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin). In total 12 speakers presented their talks and/or tutorials.

14 grudnia 2015 roku w warszawskim Teatrze Muzycznym Roma miała miejsce gala programu LIDER 2015, na której 34 laureatom otrzymało granty na innowacyjne projekty naukowe. Granty przyznało Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju (NCBR).
